Captain Jack’s Pirate Hats

When I decided to go in garb to my first Ren Fair (Carolina Renaissance Festival 2005) I was sporting the same hat that I wear to this day. It is a waxed and oiled, bifurcated tricorn, the style of which is called The MacKay.  Here is a pic:

I love this hat.  Just in case you don’t understand:  I LOVE THIS HAT.  It was purchased from the premier pirate haberdashers on the world wide web, Captain Jack’s Pirate Hats.  The haberdasher himself is Jeff MacKay.  I can not say enough good things about this particular merchant.  here are few things that you need to know about Captain Jack’s Pirate Hats:

  1. You are not buying a mass produced hat.  You are not buying a hat that some little kid overseas made three years ago and has been sitting, moldering in a warehouse.  Your hat is made to order.  This takes time, but it is worth every minute.  If you are looking for a hat for this coming Fair season, get your order in NOW!
  2. The hat is sized for your head.  Now, as anyone that knows me will tell you, I have a really big head (double entendre entended).  When the measurements were sent in, I got an email back checking to make sure that it was correct.  The hat fits me perfectly, and no one else!  I can never find a hat blank that will work on my head.  They always sit very high and I don’t want to have to spend the time re-sculpting a blank before I start making it a tricorn.  Not to mention, I am no craftsman when it comes to hat construction.  I have a general idea of how to do it but I am no haberdasher.
  3. You choose everything:  color, shape, size.  This is a custom operation.  You even get to chose what else goes on your hat.  Do you want a hat band?  Do you want it to be waxed and oiled?  I got mine waxed and oiled and it is the most water proof item that i own.  It is Ye Olde Goretex, people.  You are making a one of kind item that is made to last.

So, don’t settle for a store bought, plain-jane pirate hat.  Don’t buy a tricorn and just mash it on your head.  Buy a hat that fits.  Buy a hat that you will enjoy for the rest of your life.  Buy a costume piece that you will be proud of and that was made by a craftsman.  I can’t imagine not wearing mine… unless I buy another from the MacKay.
